On February 27, 2010, the Mauritian Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, called on the international community to react to the wall Israel is building on the Palestinian lands in Gaza, calling it “the wall of shame”. Ramgoolam, who spoke to thousands of Muslims who were celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohamed in Phoenix, in the centre of Mauritius, said the Israeli wall was like that of Berlin. He said that “the Palestinian people have legitimate rights and Israel does not have the right to take Palestinian lands”. He added that Mauritius would always defend the entitlement of the people to a state. According to him, the Palestinian people cannot create a state “because the neighbouring countries are divided,” referring to the Arab countries that surround Israel.
